Over the past two years,
the Company has been immersed in the challenging work of examining the life and
legacy of Abraham Lincoln. These
efforts have resulted in two acclaimed new works, Serenade/The
Proposition and Fondly Do We
Hope... Fervently Do We Pray.
During their creation,
Lincoln's "Ghost Train" - the spectral procession of folk legend said to be
seen departing Washington every April to follow the route of his funeral train,
yet never arriving in Springfield--emerged as a central metaphor for Lincoln's
true legacy: a commitment to the
democratic process, to "government of the people, by the people, for the
people." In these works, this
hair-raising social experiment is represented by that mysterious and elusive
sound of the train that Lincoln boarded and that we continue to ride today.
The response
from audiences, critics and presenters has been remarkable. Both works have already been met with
enthusiastic ovations, sold-out houses and critical acclaim in cities
nationwide, including New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Santa
Barbara and Irvine. For the first time in the Company's history, each
has been booked, sight-unseen, in the same year as its creation. We are calling this expanded national
and international tour the Lincoln Migrations, in honor of Lincoln's mythical
train.
We are very
fortunate to be one of the highest grossing dance companies touring
today. Unfortunately, due to rising freight and airline costs and our
commitment to working with live musicians, fees earned from presenters for
touring will only cover 60% of our actual costs for the 2010-2011 touring
seasons. To cover the remaining 40% (approximately $600,000), we are
turning to those who believe most in Bill's artistic vision.
I hope you will consider supporting Bill and his work. By making a year-end gift, you will add fuel to a significant artistic voice and bring these historically relevant and timely works to new audiences worldwide. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Jean Davidson
