Professional Development

Though in a more stylistic than technical way, Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane have also combined genres to come up with something their own...[They] have done the most thoroughly and creative job of completely transforming ballet--as well as jazz, gymnastics, social dance, sports, folk dance and vernacular gesture--into their own pastiched style...Jones and Zane are in complete control of their variegated material.
-Ann Daly, excerpt ("Body Against Body," Elizabeth Zimmer)

Through Workshops and Master Classes, the Company engages in the development of artists. These opportunities are targeted at preprofessional and professional dancers, and are led by the Education Director, Associate Artistic Director, and past and current Company members.

Master Classes

The Company's Master Classes include technique, improvisation, and phrasework. Firmly rooted in a balance of mental and physical activity, we use the studio as a laboratory for the investigation of movement and ideas.

NYC Master Classes

March 9 and 11 from 2-4pm at DNA, taught by Leah Cox
March 16 and 18 from 2-4pm at DNA, taught by Leah Cox
April 26-30 from 12-2pm at DNA, teacher TBA

Workshops

Workshops offer participating dance artists the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Jones/Zane collaborative and investigative approach to choreography. They will be closely tied to the Company's current works, and are geared towards honing choreographic and collaborative skills.

View clips from the recent Chapel/Chapter Workshop!

Participants had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the Bessie award-winning Chapel/Chapter. After seeing the work performed in the original site-specific version at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, they, learned material from the work and honed their choreographic skills by creating material using the structures that made Chapel/Chapter.

Testimonials

"Leah's [class] was...informative and well- structured. The pace was very quick, but she remained thorough in her explanations of what she expected from each exercise and how the exercises would inform our execution of the longer phrase at the end. Her classes were some of the best I have ever taken in New York, and I have been here for five years."

"The most important thing I think I learned from this workshop is to take risks. I found myself pushing the boundaries of habitual movement to discover new possibilities and make honest and creative choices. I also got a sense of the Bill T. Jones company from this workshop, and how you work artistically. I felt inspired to create and discover new aspects of my own physicality. These concepts will be applicable throughout my dance career, but immediately I plan to apply them during the final year of my BFA program, as I choreograph my senior piece and continue to work on my technical and artistic abilities as a dancer."
Chapel/Chapter Workshop Participant, June 2009
"I gained confidence in my creative dancing voice. This workshop was very encouraging for me and I feel inspired to keep connecting to the field of dance. It gave me the extra push I need to initiate my own creative processes and practice."

◊ Dancing in a House Divided
June 8, 2010

Slightly jet-lagged and certainly disoriented by a two hours drive thru a sun-blasted landscape - checkpoints and roadwork, fields spotted with workers, scattershot clusters of houses and errant donkeys - several dancers, my company's Associate Artistic Director and I finally arrived in the Palestinian town of Jenin.
